Content is King?

Content is King? Don’t You Believe It!

Don’t remember where I first read those immortal words "Content is King". But to me it’s one of those things that if repeated often enough tends to take on a life of it’s own. That is it comes to be believed to be true. Or at least commonly accepted.

Besides it’s based on truth. I mean people do surf the web in search of content, right? So Content must be king!

Well, maybe.
Content is king to the extent it’s what people are looking for.

And it’s king if you’re using as bait for links.

But it’s NOT king in all cases if you are looking to content and content alone to attract traffic through high search engine rankings.

So sure. I guess content is king to a certain extent.

But the real question is what does content alone do for your search engine rankings? Go ahead. Lay it on me.

What that? You're having trouble doing so?

Well, that's because content alone usually isn't enough.

Still, it’s true that somewhere along the line it dawned on someone that creating content was a smart way to promote web sites.

Then look at all the spammy things that notion spawned. Techniques that used to be considered quality content.
Stuff keywords into the keyword meta tag. Oh, yeah, there’s a goodie.

Use keyword laden invisible text at the bottom of the web page. That’s another one.

But not stopping there, how about getting carried away with keyword repetition in the visible text? That’s been done too.
Any of these and others were used at some point to deceive the search engines into giving some a better ranking than they deserved.

All are based on content.

So conclusion? Content must be king. NOT!

Yet are currently condoned content optimization techniques really THAT much different?

One could argue - maybe not.

It’s just that a certain amount of tricks are tolerated by the search engines. Content oriented or otherwise.

That is until too many catch on. Then Wham. Google slams the door shut. Leaving tons of previously high ranking sites, who depended on such tricks, out in the cold wondering what hit them.

Say Bye-Bye to the Content Is King Myth

Obviously creating quality content remains your basic win/win situation.
Web sites get hits from people searching for relevant information.

Those doing the searching get what they want - relevent information.

Search engines serve up relevant content.

Along the way a sale may even be made.
Yet let’s face it, all that doesn’t mean content is king. At least not from the perspective of the be all and end all of optimization techniques. Sure it’s part of the overall picture. But content alone is decidedly not king. No matter how many times you read that it is.

Okay so maybe content isn’t king. Now what? Well, I’ve put together a collection of killer ideas to share what I've learned about snagging top search engine rankings with you.
