Website Weapon

Content SEO’s Dirty Little Secret

There’s a seldom mentioned dirty little secret well known to the content seo crowd. It’s one they don’t want getting out. Because if it did become common knowledge they’re goose would be cooked.

Well, nothing like flashing a little light on a subject to flush out the truth, now is there?

The truth is this. Proponents of content seo know to pick their spots. They know not to target highly competitive keywords. They’re schooled to avoid going after one word or popular two word phrases at all costs.

Why?

The optimization might not take. <gasp>

The page might not rank well. <choke cough>

Content seo may not have the required firepower to get that page where
the site owner (i.e. the client) wants it to go.

That’s THE dirty little secret of "content rules" optimizers. And if some loose lip let that slip who’d pay even $25 a page much less some of the exorbitant rates some content seo’er are looking for.

Naturally, as you’d expect their solution is simple. Target less competitive keywords. Which to me is like saying "Let’s not but say we did" when it comes to more competitive terms.

That’s right. Don’t optimize for the really traffic laden terms because you know with content alone you can’t come out on top. Certainly that’s a winning strategy. NOT!

Now before you swallow your gum…
Let Me Hasten To Point Out: As part of an overall optimization scheme that includes an aggressive link building campaign there’s nothing wrong with this. If fact it’s smart. After you’ve developed pages for the traffic laden keywords turn your attention to the lesser lights. To make sure you’ve covering all the bases.
But by itself it’s likely a recipe for second class citizenship. You’re settling for less than the best because the weapon of choice isn’t strong enough.

Now I realize you may or may not accept this idea. And that’s okay.

I also realize there are tons of niches where it may not matter. A site for "left handed, green-eyed midget clowns" probably won't attract the attention of enough seo gurus who really know how to do it (with content AND links) to matter. In that case you’d probably do okay with content seo alone.

But for more competitive niches, like it or not you need the juice only links can bring to optimization to prevail. Because content seo by itself probably's not going to cut it. Which is the dirty little secret some would prefer you not know.

Now if you’re stuck for linking ideas I'd suggest you download "Traffic from Google in 35 Days!" right away. Then pay close attention to the sections on how to get all the links you’ll ever need.
