Domain Name Dilemma

Domain Name Dilemma

You see this question on seo discussion forums frequently:

"Will keyword rich domain names help my Google rankings?"

Short answer? Probably. But only marginally. The most likely case being
when you use your URL as your link text.

And that should only happen by accident in that you didn’t specify to your links partner what you wanted and they took a shot and missed.

Still when it comes to Google ranking you don’t have to be a lot better to beat out the competition.

Knowing that you want all the help you can get.

But…say you suddenly discovered your focus keyword should be

        organic solvents

But…that isn’t your domain name. Not by a long shot.

Yet for whatever reason surfers are eating that term up. Searching for it left and right, none stop like it’s going out of style and everything.

But like I said, your domain name while related to solvents, isn’t anywhere near an exact match.

Now what?

Well for sure you don’t bag what you’ve got and run out and get another domain name with organic solvents in it. Abandoning the listings you’ve got for what may be little more than the flavor of the day is seldom smart.

And you don’t set out to rename stuff either as that can cost you decent listings too.

But here’s what you can do.

Create a folder name organic-solvents. (Be sure to use a dash not an underscore.)

Then run new content pages out of that so they’d be
www.domain_name.com/organic-solvents/semi-aqueous.html
www.domain_name.com/organic-solvents/petroleum distillates.html
www.domain_name.com/organic-solvents/degreasing-tips.html
www.domain_name.com/organic-solvents/industrial-strength.html
This way you’ve got the hot term in your extended URL. Problem solved.

Just don’t expect some kind of big boost from that trick. It can help. But I think one inbound link from a PR 7 site might be more worthwhile.

Of course, my eBook, "Traffic from Google in 35 Days" has all sorts of ideas and proven techniques like this for getting traffic from Google, Yahoo, and soon MSN. All in one place. And all laid out in easy to understand step by step fashion. Oh yeah and no fluff or filler either. Just hard core strategies anyone can start using right away.
