Keyword Marketing Is
More Than Keyword Density

Keyword density is the ratio of the count of times a keyword or keyword phrase appears on a page compared to the total count of words on that page

While the "winning" percentage varies by market, it's generally agreed your keyword density should range between 1-20%.

I don't know how to even approach 20%. But evidently some can. I never have.

For me 10% is pushing it.

Such pages scream out to me that I'm over optimizing like crazy. And risking running afoul of Google's over optimization police. Assuming such entities exist.

Typically anymore I don't really worry about keyword density a whole lot.
I try to use the keyword naturally throughout the text. And let the density chips fall where they may. But obviously if the page is longer I will try to work the focus keyword in more often.

Keyword density used to be a valuable tool for getting high ranking. That's why some sites had a script of some kind to calculate it for you. Yes it still does play a significant role with Yahoo. Which rates on page content more than any other factor, like say links for example. But doesn't have much positive impact that I know of with Google.
