Putting the Kibosh on Link Popularity
Ever watch a kid and a collection? Be it bird feathers…bugs…or Legos even. You name it and the big idea to them is to accumulate as many of the favored whatevers as possible.Well that’s much the same way some webmasters look at links.
They play the game like it’s the one with the most links wins.
Wrong.
They’re playing the link popularity game.
The point of view of that game cheerfully overlooks the importance of link reputation.
It overlooks pagerank.
It overlooks whether the site linking to them is in their niche or category.
These are all important factors.
It’s not simply a raw numbers game where the one with the most links wins.
Winning the link popularity game is like being voted most popular at the local beauty pageant. It’s another way of saying "YOU ain’t gonna be crowned the Miss America".Link popularity is NOT the reason sites rank well.
It’s more a combination of the three things I stated earlier, link rep, pagerank, and "niche-ness" - if I can coin a word.
In other words quality not quantity wins the day.
Oh and remember too that the number of links that shows in each engine will be different.
Google typically only shows links PR 4 or higher.
FAST or All the Web shows all it can find.
Still each search engine has it’s own rule book.
Each also has it’s own list of pages they’ve indexed.
Either of which could account for any discrepancy.
So if you want to collect high ranking pages don’t worry about link popularity. Focus instead on pagerank, link reputation and getting links in the same niche or market as yours. That’s what it takes to win the game of links.
