But I have to warn you - better put on your fire proof suit on. That’s because this article touches on a hot, even emotional topic and you don’t want to get singed.

Oh boy! Question is, is buying links a sound seo practice or wayward recklessness?

Seems to me it depends. On who you buy the link from.

Shell out $299 to get into Yahoo's directory and you're not taking much risk. That's a mainstream technique.

And yes. You ARE technically buying a link here aren't you? Sure it's commonly called paying for a directory listing. But trust me. You're buying a link regardless of what it's called.

Then I regularly visit the Akron Beacon Journal's online sports page to catch up on Cleveland Indians news. Smack dab in the middle of the page they display what they call an "Ask the Expert Advertising Feature".

Do you believe for a second they prominently profile companies there out of the goodness of their hearts?

Doubtful. It's purely a paid listing. Also known as a bought link.

Plus do you think advertisers are the least bit nervous about showing up there?

I think not.

They're buying a link much like an advertiser buys an ad in the hard copy edition of the paper. So again pretty mainstream stuff.
