Search engine optimization is a load of crap alright. C.R.A.P. as in Certain to Reap Alot of Profits! :)

But if you hear search engine optimization (seo) and your eyes glaze over, as if you were trying to do algebra or something, let me rescue you.

Granted seo is NOT an exact science.

In fact, some would swear to a certain extent it is part voodoo part black magic.

Yet there ARE simple strategies anyone can follow that will give you the best shot at a top 10 search engine ranking right out of the chute.

So let's look at three such tricks you can try right now.

SEO Trick #1: For starters, as far as any search engine is concerned, the most important real estate on any web page is the first 250 or so words following right after the <BODY> tag. So you want to cram that vital territory with keywords and keyword phrases.

Problem is, most sites that use HTML tables to control page layout waste this space with the navigation area.

Big mistake.

SEO Trick #2: Next search engines determine what your site is about by measuring keyword density. Density meaning how many times certain keywords appear in your text.

This makes keyword density one of the key important factors when it comes to search engine optimization (rankings).

So let’s say you have an article about the care and feeding of ferrets. Written in the hopes of ranking well for the phrase "feeding ferrets".

Before you convert the text to HTML, simply count how many words are in your article. Then count how many times the phrase "feeding ferrets" shows up.

To simplify if there are 100 words and the word "feeding ferrets" occurs 5 times, you've got a keyword density of 5%. Pretty simple huh?

Okay, but what is the optimum keyword density? Or the one that almost guarantees top 10 rankings.

Good question. And that's the problem. Ask any 10 search engine optimization gurus and you're apt to get 10 different numbers.

On top of that the magic number is different for each search engine.

And it changes.

So to have the best chance of ranking well, let me suggest you start off with a 4-7% keyword density. Then check your initial page rank. If you are in the top 20 don't change a thing. Otherwise tweak it until you do. Gradually bumping up the density a bit each time.

And you're right. It is NOT a cut and dry process, but more trial and error.

Another approach is to model what top ranked sites for ferrets are doing.

Simply cut and paste their text into a word processor.
Get a total word count.
Next do a keyword or keyword phrase count.
Compare what all 10 are doing to get an average.
Then duplicate the average keyword density of those top ranking sites on your site.

SEO Trick #3: Finally, it pays to focus on the right keywords. As in it really really pays.

So is it ezine or e-zine?

Catsup or ketchup?

Picture or photo?

Picking the wrong keyword, i.e. that no one searches on, to focus on can be the kiss of death. Cheating yourself out of money making traffic simply because you made the wrong keyword choice because you didn't know any better.
