SEO Copywriting Defined

SEO copywriting is the term used to describe the process of developing the visible text you see on a web page. Ideally you want it to appeal to both humans and search engines. So that it results in high ranking for the keyword phrases targeted as well as product sales.

Writing for seo is somewhat different than your run of the mill copywriting. It’s different because of the need to attract search engine bots. So with seo copywriting, it’s not just what you say, it’s where you put the (key)words used to say it.

Yet spend any time scanning pages of sites oriented toward seo copywriting and you’ll soon discover just how important it really is (he says tongue firmly planted in cheek)
"SEO copywriting on your site is one of THE most important aspects of making it with the engines."

"Use SEO copywriting to get a top search engine listing."

"Good SEO copywriting insures your site gets highly qualified traffic that in turn leads to higher conversions."
Who knew?

Now before you jump down my throat, I don’t single these examples out to pick on anyone. Just to show that there are some who feel content derived from seo copywriting is the primary source of search engine success.

It’s not. At least not the primary source. It’s more like part of the supporting cast much of the time.

Besides, like Phil Craven pointed out in an article on the same topic, what do you do if your page done by an seo copywriter starts slipping in the rankings? Assuming it’s where it is due to seo copywriting my guess is you’re screwed and relegated to eventual oblivion. Because what else is there to do to combat the more seo savvy competitors targeting that same keyword. Probably not much but links.

Of course that’s not to say there aren’t some seo copywriting tricks of the trade that do work. Here’s two I use from time to time.
When you’re done with a web page and need to work in a couple more instance of the target keyword , read over the text. Go through it looking for pronouns you can replace with your target keyword.

Along the same lines instead of saying "this will help you win pinewood derby races" you might write "this pinewood derby ebook will help you win pinewood derby races". Giving you one more instance of the target phrase "pinewood derby".
Don’t get me wrong. Writing for the search engines, which is basically all seo copywriting comes down to, is important. But in my opinion it’s not usually THE most important factor for ranking well. Unless the focus keyword is non competitive and so not being targeted by a cast of tens of thousands.
