Web Site Links by the NumbersPaint by the numbers paintings are set up to anyone can paint like an old master. Well almost. Okay if push came to shove it might look like that from a distance. Like to that pilot flying overhead at 10,000 feet or more.Web site links by the numbers works just the opposite. I wanted to spell out why some so called seo experts apparently avoid pursuing links like the plague. You see, for some their ideal world would seemingly include search engine algorithms that would favor content over web site links. Sadly Google doesn’t fit into that picturesque scene. Web site links are favored for three good reasons. Reason one: Content is easier to put up It’s no big deal to put up content pages. I can do six or seven optimized pages in 6 hours starting from scratch if I put my mind to it. Or even farm out the work and get pages done for as little as five bucks a pop. So that worst case, with a bit of tweaking, I’ve got optimized content that’s ready to rock and roll with very little effort on my part. Reason two: If content really did rule, what kind of content would be doing the ruling? Most likely we’d return to the bad old days. Of keyword stuffing and other spammy stuff masquerading as decent content. Stuck up on a web site to fool the search engines into ranking it high. Disappointing visitors and search engine bots alike. Anyone with access to a word processor and HTML editor would suddenly become an overnight seo guru. In no time at all, even Google’s site wouldn’t come up at the top of searches for the term "google". But would be buried after all manner of "content". Using that term very loosely. Reason three. Links take more time and management. Best case I can find five or six quality linking partners an hour. And I’ll be you can’t do any better. By quality I mean » PR 4 or higher links page (not home pages). » No Zeus sites. » No framed sites. » Fewer than 80 links on the links page. » With contact info or an add url page readily available. While necessary, no way would I describe this as fun however. Next, once you find ‘em you have to put their link on YOUR links page first. No biggie. But more time. You also have to monitor your trades. Speaking from experience, without software help this will ultimately overwhelm you and cause you to stop doing it. Oh and someone has to do all that emailing and Add URL form filling. Sure we’re not talking ditch digging here. But it takes more time. For me, when I’m on a roll I can get about 20 of those done in an hour. So when it comes to web site links by the numbers what are we talking about to do 20? Approximately » 4 hours to find 20 potential partners. » 30 minutes to get them on my links page. » An hour to fire off the first batch of swap requests. » And to keep it simple another hour for round two and then to remove those that don’t link up. Adding that up looks like between six and seven hours. Generally 40% will comply yielding 7 or 8 links. Assuming you've got anything worth linking to that should be what you get too.
